The human eye tends to blend small things together even if they’re different in tone, which is good for anti-aliasing & dithering, but bad for itty bitty sprites. Having all the parts stand out is a priority. Lastly, a bit of advice I got off one of my older post: Rpg maker mv character sprite how to#Here’s how to avoid the “invalid color depth” error, and here’s how to import your sprites just in case! This way, my characters don’t jerk back and forth weirdly. I keep my character’s feet exactly on the ground (and 1px down on moving sprites to simulate, well, movement) and their bodies centered with the purple line. ![]() Since character height & placement matters, I always create a guide to make sure my characters don’t wobble around. They’ll line up seamlessly as events in the editor this way. That means if I wanted to put a bench into a characterset for whatever reason, it would go from this in the tileset… This isn’t of a big of a deal with character sprites, but it’s good to keep in mind when you’re making ground tiles in the character sets (you’d use those for animation and such). If you had 2 charasets that filled up the entire boxes and put them side by side, any pixels those sprites have in the teal zone would overlap with each other. (highlighted in teal)? Those mark where the sprite goes over the in-game grid. You see those slightly smaller rectangles I have in the guides up there ? The ones that are just 4 pixels across Remember, each row is which way they’re facing! I remember which one goes where by the handy nmonic “Never Ever Smoke Weed” (North, East, South, and then West on the bottom). The 4 rows (across) are for the 4 directions your character will face in game: north, east, south, and west. The left and right columns are the character when they’re moving. The center column (down) of your boxes are where you put what the character looks like when they’re not moving. You can change the color yourself of course, and find a few different versions floating around the net (mine’s modified from a template I found in my template tag!)Įach 3x4 block of boxes are one character, like this: There’s no difference other than one’s a light guide and the other’s dark. Since I’m not quite sure what you’re asking, here’s some tutorials on how to create character sprites & pixel art in general if you just want some advice ![]()
